Projects and Handouts by Jadwiga Radomyskowa
Welcome to my little corner of Athenaeum! I am Jadwiga Radomyskowa, my home is in the Shire of Thornwold where I run the Thornwold Scriptorium, a group of amazing painters, illuminators, calligraphers and wordsmiths who put their talents towards making Scribal art for the Kingdom of An Tir and Beyond! In my Scriptorium, I try to encourage people to learn as much as possible, and where I am not able to teach I try to bring in people to share their knowledge and talents and as my scribes become more proficient in their paths, I encourage them, in turn, teach others!
In the 8 years that I have been in An Tir I have created a variety of scrolls, charters, as well as taught many classes as well as made handouts and videos. Please take a look at this page to see a selection of them!
I am in fealty to Master Guidobaldo Marco Odo Romeo d’Aquila.
Original Works
This is a small collection of original art that I have done over the years. In all cases, the words and calligraphy are not done by me, and are penned by those with far more talent than I.

Handouts
Here are handouts that I have created for classes I have given!
The make and use of period pigments.
Guide book on how to create scrolls and charters for use in the Kingdom of An Tir!
This handout covers flat and raised gilding, how to do it in a couple different ways, as well as how to make the various materials you need. It will also cover where to get them.
Videos
In these unprecedented times, I have taken to recording myself doing scribal works. The first three are speedpaints, which is to say they are time-lapses videos of me creating art. The rest are instructional and conversational. These were all filmed live, and include commentary with the people watching them.
My newest video! This is the scroll I did for Vikingr’s Knighting last weekend at Tir Righ Investiture. This scroll took the better part of a month to do. It was painted using mostly period pigments in sea shells, as well as Sumi gold, and a modern brush pen for the final inking. Interesting fact, there are only five colors on this scroll: Ultramarine Blue Imitation Cadmium Red Aluminum Powder Silver Sumi Gold Titanium White Also, yes you will see the kitten popping up quite a bit. His name is Kovash and he is 10 weeks old.

Sir Einar’s Tourney Shield
This project took up the first part of the quarantine and was one of the most challenging things I’ve done in a while. My Knight, Sir Einarr tasked me painting his tourney shield with something that represented how I saw him. (Yes, he will be fighting with this.) So…over-inspired, and maybe over-ambitious, I set on this project. Based on an image by one of my favorite artists of all time, Ivan Bilibin, and the iconography of St. George I came up with this. It is gilded and full of little references about my fealty to one of the greatest people I have had the pleasure of getting to know. I hope my love and respect for this man shows…

The original sketch. Overall the art stayed the same, except the border. It started with knotwork, and on the top it had art representing myself and my squire brother. It changed later for something that made more sense to the art overall, and would work better with my plans. I started to ink! Here you will notice a very different border than the finished image. I liked this idea a lot, as it had cool knots and a unicorn and sun motif on the top to represent myself and my squire brother. This was going to be a problem area no matter what. People are not my strong suits, so I saved it for last. When in doubt, reach out to friends! My dear friend Genevieve Desmarius (Sheena Boychuck) was there to help me. I sent her this image. All inked up! The blank border is because I would mirror it on the computer. At this point, I had dropped the unicorn image and added a ‘cameo’ to the top corners, and in it put a horn. This has meaning to my Knight as well as being part of his heraldry. At this point, I finalized the art, and the border. I finally came up with something that looked cohesive I moved the horns down to the bottom and mirrored the cameo with an axe on the top. That is another bit from his heraldry. While I was sad to loose my little unicorn on the top, that made more sense and would look good when gilded. Trouble helped. As cats do. Next step was to transfer the art to the shield. Thanks to Sir Helga I was given the secret for easy and clean art. (Pro Tip: carbon paper) I started to paint. This is laying down base colors. Black behind the border, and red in the cameos as it is in his heraldry. I started in on the dragon and the foreground. Lots of details, and scales and grass. And rocks. And the horns. All the colors are laid in and shaded. It’s very unfinished looking as it’s not outlined, and all the white bits will be gilded.
I actually started to question what I was doing because in the upper corner the horse and the sky started to blend in. But I trusted my self and said I’d wait to see.I started gilding the shield! You can see the pink color of the size on the whole thing. Gilding done. Oh my god. There is gold on me, my spouse, my cats, my floor. Everywhere.
Still.
Best worst idea ever. Now, I started inking.
This is best part. This style of art looks so amazing when its outlined. After over 30 hours it’s done. There are fun things like a kitty paw print from when one of my cats actually stepped on the shield. And a few other things.
I am so proud of this. The finished piece in all it’s glory. And last but not least, the reference image.
The End.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my little page. I know it’s a lot of miscellaneous things, but it’s hard for me to choose just one, and I hope that this shows a variety of my talents, the ways in which I endeavor to help out the scribal community of my Kingdom, and the love I have for all the people that I work with.
Please feel free to reach out to me with more questions, if you want to chat, and I am always happy to teach classes, (on-line right now) about any subject that I know, either one-on-one or to a group.
Yours in humble service,
Jadwiga
HOLY mackerel, your work is just so stunning, your eye for color and balance is AMAZING. Also your drawing ability is something I am forever jealous of. 😛 I am so lucky to know you and share such a cool hobby with you. Thank you for sharing your talent with me and so many others.
Astounding! What an fantastic display of your amazing skills and passion. I look forward to watching the videos. Well done!
It is always a pleasure to see your works presented! I love the medieval aesthetic you achieve, and the effort and detail you put into each scroll. I treasure the ones you’ve made of mine, and any chance I have had to present your work I have been extremely blessed.
Great work – I wish you’d take a few of these items and talk in detail about the originals you used for inspiration, techniques, etc. Walk us through a project and why you did what you did.
Your work is SO lovely and amazing. I always enjoy how important and centered teaching is in your space. The tiny scroll made in an hour is amazing. I will admit one of my favorite scrolls is a tiny scrap of paper, much like this. Honestly, I “grew up” in the East Kingdom (which doesn’t have seals) and the range of scroll sizes was much wider… I love small scrolls.
Lovely work! You have a really impressive range in style and design. I would be very interested in chatting with you about your process and discussing how you take the work from the source images to the final work!
This is impressive as well as beautiful collection. Thank you for displaying so much of your work, so that we can see it. You do great work.
As always, your work looks amazing.
looks good thank you for your display I miss seeing you
